I often feel blessed living on Daniel Island but these past couple of days have really cemented my appreciation of this place. As this photo of kayakers paddling through the downtown market area attests, the Charleston region and beyond is undergoing a once in a lifetime drenching. Rain, rain, and more rain has been the forecast for the last 48 hours and this time the weather people have been spot on.
My heart goes out to everyone who is undergoing the flooding. Sand bags and rubber boots are essentials, especially downtown on the peninsula. It has been incredible the amount of rain this area has received. Roads, stores, and schools everywhere in the area are closed and soon the massive clean up will begin.
However on Daniel Island, there has been minimal flooding because it is one of the higher locations in the Lowcountry. Luckily, we have been spared much of the despair that is engulfing the rest of the region. There are definitely areas on the island that are pretty soggy but by and large, Daniel Island has dodged a bullet.
Granted, our elevated flood plain is not one of the first selling points when I talk about living on Daniel Island, but after this weekend it certainly will be a talking point. On a more personal note, it’s been wonderful that so many friends from around the country have contacted us inquiring about our situation. I feel sheepish when I tell them that it’s actually been fun enjoying the Lowcountry version of a “snow day.”
As Don Henley famously crooned, “Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach. I feel it in the air, The summer’s out of reach.” Yes, summer is over and I hope you had a wonderful one but I know my number crunchers always like to stay updated on Daniel Island Real Estate sales numbers. So here you go, things are still red hot and no slow down is in slight:
Wow, this story of generosity just floored me when I read it in this week’s Daniel Island News. The link to the story is below but it exemplifies the type of community spirit that pulses throughout Daniel Island.
It’s a quick read and it’s a touching story of a 16 year old girl with chronic pain, a piano, the power of note writing, and a tremendous healing gesture courtesy of The Black Tie Music Academy (BTMA). The owners of this musical instruction school really stepped up and met a need and should be commended for this wonderful act of generosity. But read the story, it truly is a feel good one and makes me proud to call Daniel Island home.
“Where to Retire” magazine, a magazine which I hope to be profiled in one day, recently announced their top 50 master planned communities in the US. It is quite an honor and this is the 4th consecutive year Daniel Island was selected!
While Daniel Island is certainly not a retirement community, there are plenty of residents who are “actively jobless” as one retiree friend joyfully describes himself. Activities are plentiful on Daniel Island for everyone but the retirees that I know have no intention of moving off Daniel Island
The magazine’s editors based their selections on access to social and community groups, healthy living, and diverse recreational amenities. Daniel Island’s development was especially designed to provide such a lifestyle and it is nice to see it recognized by “Where to Retire” magazine. Now I just have to figure out a way to become one of the “actively jobless” so I can take advantage of everything this special place has to offer!
Ahh, the dog days of August are upon us. But I know my number crunchers never rest so here are the results from our July sales report — To summarize, sales are as sizzling as the weather! http://www.danielisland.com/real-estate-activity/current-activity/
Your summer buddies? Shade and water, just like a dog . . .
The next time you make a car reservation, save yourself some dollars and use Autoslash. A friend of mine turned me on to this website and boom! — I saved over $50 on a three day rental from Enterprise. And it was easy!
All you do is make your rental car reservation like normal, and then enter the confirmation number and the rental company –Avis, Hertz, etc. Autoslash then begins their magic and searches for a lower price while you sit back and enjoy the savings. It emails you when it finds a lower price (it almost always does) and off you go to the rental counter, easy as that.
I’m not sure how they work, nor do I really care. All I know is that It works. Try it and let me know how it works for you.
June was another big month for sales on Daniel Island! The activity was on fire as we listed 17 properties and 4 of them already received offers. For more information on June’s activity, click here: http://www.danielisland.com/real-estate-activity/current-activity/ Stay cool everyone and don’t forget the sunscreen!
They say the third time is the charm and the city of Charleston is certainly living a charmed life in the eyes of Travel + Leisure readers. For the third consecutive year, they voted Charleston the #1 travel destination in the US and Canada. Rival magazine Conde Nast Traveler has voted Charleston as the top city for four years running. The accolades never stop for the Holy City as it was voted the second best city in the world. Kyoto, Japan took first place in the T + L poll.
Judgements were based on a number of categories such as landmarks, culture, the arts, food, people and value. “Charleston clearly keeps on delivering one of the most satisfying travel experiences in the United States and the world”, stated the magazine’s editor, Nathan Lump.
For those of us lucky enough to live here, it’s always nice to be honored by such awards. And for those of you who have not visited Charleston yet, what are you waiting for? Come see for yourself what makes Charleston the country’s top travel destination!
I am in the business of extolling the benefits of living on Daniel Island. But did you know that you can call the Daniel Island police station (843-849-0304) and request extra patrolling of your house while you are away? Many times they will even station a patrol car outside your house to ward off potential evil doers.
Just give them a heads up when you will be out of town. They will ask you if you have a security system in place and/or if you have a dog. What they will do is patrol the neighborhood and it does give you an added dose of security while you are away from home.
While break-ins are rare on Daniel Island, it’s always a good idea to have an extra layer of protection just in case. So feel free to call on the men and women in blue as they continue to serve and protect!
Charleston has received many accolades as a tourist destination but what drove Volvo (pun intended) to select it for their first US manufacturing plant? Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars North America, stated that the overseas accessibility to the Port of Charleston, the qualified workforce base, and the experience of the state’s industrial recruiters were the major reasons in determining this $500 million investment. While abundant sunshine and palm trees are nice, it’s these influential factors that are causing companies like Volvo, Daimler, and Boeing to call Charleston home.
The Charleston industrial real estate landscape will soon be welcoming more suppliers and further supplanting the region as a hub for large commercial activity. The nearby Berkeley county land site chosen by Volvo is located close to Interstate 26 and within 30 miles of the Port of Charleston. What was once a field of pine trees will soon have a new rail line built for Volvo and a pool of talented workers which could number up to 4000 jobs by 2030.
Volvo’s move to Charleston has answered one big question while simultaneously supplying another: Is the Charleston industrial market able to attract major manufacturing? A resounding “Yes!” And the intriguing question it raises is — “Who’s next?”
